What is Osteopenia?
Osteopenia means that your bone density has decreased but not so much that it can be considered osteoporosis. However, the decreased bone density can still lead to fragile bones that break very easily. Having a bone density test is the most accurate way of diagnosing this condition. Not all people with osteopenia require medication but your physician can assess your needs based on the results of the bone density scan as well as other risk factors.
Symptoms of bone loss include:
- Receding gums
- Decreased grip strength
- Weak and brittle fingernails
- Cramps, muscle aches, and bone pain
- Height loss
- Low overall fitness
